What is a MP4 file?

MP4 is the most common video format. It is a container that usually holds H.264 video and AAC audio, and it plays on almost every phone, computer, TV, browser and social network. Phones, cameras and screen recorders save MP4 by default. Video files can still be large, so people compress MP4s to send them by email or chat, extract the audio as MP3, or turn short clips into GIFs.

How to open a MP4 file

  • Windows: plays in Media Player or the Films & TV app.
  • Mac: plays in QuickTime Player.
  • iPhone: plays in Photos or Files.
  • Android: plays in Google Photos or any video player.

Common Situations for Trimming Footage

In-browser trimming is ideal for several practical, everyday media tasks:

Cleaning meeting recordings: Trim awkward pauses, waiting screens, and trailing chatter from recorded Zoom meetings, webinars, or screencasts before sending them to clients.

Social media snippets: Cut out the most exciting seconds from lengthy 4K smartphone videos to share quickly across messaging platforms without re-uploading entire files.

Archiving action footage: Extract the best highlights from hours of continuous biking, skiing, or drone footage to free up valuable storage space on your hard drive.

Removing false starts: Slice off botched intros or microphone check tests from video podcasts before final compilation.

Why convert in your browser?

Most online converters send your files to their servers and promise to delete them later. FileFlip does the work on your own device instead, so there is nothing to delete: you can even switch on airplane mode after the page loads and it keeps working. See the privacy proof

Frequently asked questions

Does trimming a video reduce its visual quality?

Not when using the default stream copy mode. Because stream copy cuts the file without re-encoding, the video and audio remain 100% identical to your original file.

Why does the cut point jump slightly in fast mode?

Fast trimming uses stream copy, which requires cuts to align with keyframes (I-frames) placed at intervals by the camera or encoder. If you need a cut on an exact frame between keyframes, enable precise mode.

What video file formats can I trim?

The tool accepts MP4, MOV, and WebM video files. You can trim individual clips or process up to 10 files in a single batch.

What happens when I enable precise mode?

Precise mode bypasses keyframe snapping by re-encoding your cut segment into H.264 video. This lets you set exact cut boundaries down to the frame at the expense of a short re-encoding step.

Are my video clips uploaded to FileFlip servers?

No. Your videos are processed entirely on your device using WebAssembly technology. The footage is never uploaded to any remote server and stays completely private.

Can I trim videos without an active internet connection?

Yes. After loading the tool in your web browser for the first time, all processing logic is stored locally, allowing you to trim clips even in airplane mode.
